15,000 words so far, and I’m really proud of myself. I don’t know if I’ll ever let anyone read it, but here’s a glimpse of what I’ve been working on…
Time stopped. Anna heard a ringing in her eyes and a sharp pain shoot through her head. Her mind tried to wrap itself around the words that just left Matthew’s mouth. They pierced her like daggers. Her vision blurred, and soon all she could hear was her own breathing.
“Anna? Anna, are you listening to me?”
Matthew was peering up at her. At some point while Anna was comprehending what was happening to her, Matthew had moved to the floor in front of her. He placed his hand on hers.
“Don’t touch me!” Anna shouted, yanking her hand away. “How could you do this to me? The entire time? We’ve been together for six years. We’ve been engaged for over one year!”
“I know. I can’t hide it any longer. I will start cancelling the wedding and find a new place to live.”
This could not be happening. Not to Anna. She had excitedly been texting her bridesmaids for the last year planning colors and flowers. She was picking out the perfect gifts for her baby cousins that would have served as flower girls. She had paid deposits. Vendors were reserved. There was no way they could prepare themselves for a a different wedding on her day at this point. What would her parents say? They had been gracious enough to fund the entire wedding. They have had money set aside for years. No. She could salvage this. They could go to couple’s therapy. They could work through their issues and worst-case scenario they would postpone the wedding. This could not be happening.
“I don’t understand what’s happening. So, what are we?” Anna pleaded.
“We are nothing.”
